Some of you may know that I have a very unhealthy fascination with wind power, that being said I could not resist posting this. The "Wind Knitting Factory" is simply amazing. If anyone has a circular knitting machine they would like to part with send me a message! I have quite a few ideas to improve on this idea, hats... or scarves off to you.

"With the power of the wind, a knitting machine knits from the outside towards the inside of a building. The knitted material is harvested from time to time and rounded-off in individually packaged scarves. Each scarf has its own label which tells you in how much time it has been knitted and on which date."

Sometimes you run across an idea that is so refreshing that it bares sharing. This is just such a case, and sadly I don't think it was ever produced. Jonathan Davies of Hello Milo has a wonderfully simple calendar that uses colors to represent the seasons. I wish it had been produced, I would have purchased 10. Check it out.

Oakley Stroller

I don't usually blog about baby items... but when you find some thing as cool as this it just has to be posted. This was a project exploring the signature concepts. The Oakley stroller is the brain child of Joe Iacono, and I have to say I think most people could look cool pushing this thing around.

Most of the time I come up with nothing, but today I hit a great blog that has tons of great information. Parka Blog is a singapore native that has a fascination with art books (a kindred spirit). I run across many architecture related websites every day. But few keep my attention longer than a page or two, that is until I found ArchDaily (http://www.archdaily.com/). Its a refreshing look at great architecture new and old. The website features a refreshing array of known and unknown architects doing great work. They cover not only built work but conceptual and future works. I would highly recommend bookmarking it and adding it to your daily reading.

I don't usually post entries about pay per month software (mainly because I think its a joke, just another way to steal your money). But I couldn't resist SlideRocket. Its relatively cheep compared to some and seems to be a powerful alternative to powerpoint. I am most impressed by its ability to use flash files in presentations. This was an option in older powerpoint and keynote versions but has since been removed.

SlideRocket does have its limitations.
Cons: You need to be online, and the standalone presenter (not creator) is only available to the business clients.
Pros: Present online no software necessary, flash animations, all the fancy transitions, and online storage.

All in all, this online solution is marginally worth the money. I would like to see a online/offline alternative but over all its a powerful app. Check it out: http://www.sliderocket.com/

Update: Another user pointed out they do have a "Free" version. The free version doesn't have all the function of the pay version. These limitations essentially make the free version for me a toy and not really a replacement for anything. If you only need something quick and online check out the free version. If you are serious about presenting the pay versions are the only way to go.

GE Ecomagination

Its not often that you run across a really cool and interactive website these days. GE has done a very nice job with their ecomagination website. The website includes some augmented reality, for those of you who don't know augmented reality uses something called marker and a webcam to produce a sudo interactive model on screen. You can move the marker and navigate the 3D model. GE's version is interesting, I'm not fully sure it serves any purpose but take a look. If you have a web cam check out the augmented reality segment. Otherwise the graphics are well put together. http://ge.ecomagination.com/smartgrid/

Mirrors Edge: Living on Roof Tops

For those of you who don't know I am an avid gamer... when I get the chance. I recently started playing a new game from EA and DICE Mirrors Edge. The games is based on runner(s) that carry incriminating data about the government to those who can use it against the government (Rough Description). That aside the game is stunningly beautiful you spend most of the game on the roof(s) of a utopian society ( which really isn't ). After playing this game I started wonder as designers how would we design if we lived above the city or at least on top of it. We spend 99% of our time far below in the shadows when we could live in the sky. I think we would see a lot fewer flat gravel roofs.

GrassHopper Workshop

One reason for attending ACADIA is they offer outstanding workshops. I had the good fortune of attending the Grasshopper Workshop (generative components for Rhino). The workshop alone was worth the trip. Below are a few things that we created. Keep in mind its more impressive in person.

You cant see it in the photos but by moving a single point in the model the curve will adapt to the location of the point.

I have what could be defined as a unhealthy love affair with the wind turbine, but even I had a blast watching one fail. Apparently the speed control which slows or stops the turbines in high winds, failed on this one... catastrophically.

The buzz word of the year seems to be "GREEN." You can't turn on the news or any other channel without hearing talk of global warming and environmental responsibility. The truth be told architects and designers have been dealing with this subject for 50+ years even if it fell on deaf ears and before that it was unheard of for a building not to interact with the environment. It was pure necessity. But for the majority of the consumer population it was a non issue until celebrities decided to get on board. This made it cool to be "GREEN" although most people haven't a clue what being green means. They think if they have all the so called "GREEN" products in their 300,000 SQFT mansion it's ok for them to have such a large foot print. Let's not forget the cost to maintain the life style they are accustom to. Never mind that the fossil fuels that are consumed to heat their pool because they have bamboo floors. What about the cost of getting the bamboo from Asia to America. For the fuel consumed just in shipping alone, you would be better off recycling old hardwood floors but those are not considered so "GREEN".

So why the rant? Well I think it's appropriate for people to understand what it takes to have a zero emission home. Everything has to be considered from the products used to the size and method of construction. So how about one in the Antarctic? Well thats just what the Princess Elizabeth Station claims to be. And where more fitting than in one of the few places that is relatively pristine.

Growing A Tree House

Every kid dreams of having a tree house but when architects dream the idea of a tree house goes to the next level. A nonprofit organization TeReForm started by Mitchell Joachim, Lara Greden, and Javier Arbona took the idea beyond the obvious. I think the video explains it better than I ever could, enjoy.

I met Ruairi Glynn at ACADIA this year and I can say he is a complete nut, a blast to hang out with, and a good friend. His work is internationally recognized and now he can prove it! His most recent work, Performative Ecologies, has been nominated for the Europrix Top Talent Award. "The EUROPRIX Top Talent Award gives young professionals and top students the chance to be promoted and exposed on the European stage." Its much deserved, Congrats Ruairi!!

Job Hunting

It seems as if I have been in school my whole life... wait I have! Its that time I have one semester to finish and I will have my Masters so its time to look for a job. I started the tedious task of putting together a portfolio, polishing my resume, starting a CV which is the equivalent of a teaching resume, and getting references. Mabey by this time next year I will be writing from some exotic locale and sipping a cool glass of tea... wishful thinking I will probably end up in a cubicle but im keeping my hopes up.

I have spent most of my time teaching in a studio so I have lots to do. I will be glad when the weeks up but then its time to work on job applications and portfolios. More after a week...

After my plane has landed and I get unpacked, what's next? Well its back to special topics mainly one, the bench project. Im working on getting a fullscale mock up of some of the parts, with limited time and budget this may be difficult. I wont go into to much detail now but I will upload some images what I am currently developing.

Well this is the last day of the conference, I seem to have spent more time doing the tourist thing and less time doing the CSCW thing, what ever that is. Over all the conference has been a success, lots of great speakers and some excellent food. Several days this week it snowed so we received an added bonus on top of the lovely location. Well now its just the flight home and the return to whatever was neglected.

Im may have to change the name of this blog, some of these posts have nothing to do with architecture, but rather technology. I am a huge fan of Bill Amend and his foxtrot comic, and its time for the Foxtrot's scary geek Hallowe'en costume, 2006 edition. There are regular references to Apple and Tech, one of the best is the reference to the famous ipod commercials.

Well its conference time once again, im off to Banff Canada for CSCW 2006 (Computer Supported Cooperative Work). We have our plane tickets and are ready to go, well later this week. Some of the heavy hitters will be there Google, Microsoft, Intel, and the list goes on. So hopefully lots of conference goodies. More updates and goodies from the conference later.

ACADIA Conference

Well, ACADIA is almost over my presentation has come and gone, and exhibition of the work is open. Some of the work at the conference is the best I have seen, although sadly there is not much talk of sustainability. There seems to be more emphasis of algorithmic architecture, and not much on the inhabitation of space. Next year holds promise but that remains to be seen, hopefully sustainability will be more emphasized.

Well im almost done, i still have lighting and shelving to go but im almost done. Things never go as planned, I tried my best to keep things plumb and square but even a 1/32" screws things up. After days of fine tuning I finally finished the bottom and top panels. More to come soon.

UPDATE: I recently met Tristan on October 12 at ACADIA where he presented his work. He in a lot of ways is ahead of where architecture is going. Im looking forward to collaborating with him and exploring the implications of robotics.

Robotics and building, two things that just seem to go together. It seems that every object created these days reacts to us in some way, now its architecture's turn. Imagine a building reacting to its environment breathing when it needs air moving when it need room, the possibilities are endless.

ACADIA Here I Come!

Well good news, my paper on "ARRHYTHMIC SOUNDS" was excepted to be published and presented. The premiss of the research is that sound from the outside would i.e. outside the building or space can be used to help make isolated interior space more comfortable for inhabitants.

"Using music in these spaces has become commonplace. However, this research chooses to address sounds that do not mask the arrhythmic sounds of the world. These random sounds might break a person’s concentration, just as a bird flying by a window breaks one’s concentration. Even though these sounds of nature, vehicles, and people interrupt, do they give a greater sense of place than ambient music? Do these breaks in concentration help keep an individual oriented and aware of time while increasing both comfort and connection to the work being done?"

I wont go any further than that because the paper is lengthy but if anyone wants to know more just let me know. The one thing that has began to sink in is that i have to present my idea to several hundred people.........

In Case You Don't Know I Am A Mac Freak

To tell you some more about me, Im a Mac addict. I do most of my work on a Mac three to be exact but i do dreadfully own one dell pc that gets me by when I need it. My best computer is a old sawtooth that I salvaged from a friend and upgraded. I converted several years back and I haven't looked back. Now that boot camp is out the future of my dell is in jeopardy.

Well its that time again im pushing to another deadline with what seems to be an impossible task of construction. With 5 weeks remaining I have to fully construct a modern display-case. So far so good im still working on design so im a hair behind but I have all my stuff ready pending approval from the dean of the college. So far i have some preliminary design work but no finish model. Heres what I have for now.

Homeless Shelter

This was probably my favorite project, we had to develop a homeless shelter that could sleep 4. My idea was a shelter that had some significant meaning to people that were homeless. For me the idea of not having a home or some where to go is foreign, so i tried to give the shelter some significance by creating a more modern womb the epitome of shelter.

Haven't posted in a while so ill bring you up to speed. i have since done away with the funky facade for a more do-able glass facade that is frosted structural glass. the frosting of the glass gives me a ambiance of the internal structure. more to come.........

This is something I have wanted to try for a while, I am going to post periodically my architectural process. 2-3 Times a week I will post an updated telling where I am In the current project. I will also be posting tech documents, other friends work, and my top links.
